Had a rough start.
I went into labour at 37 weeks, on the dot.
I JUST made the cutoff to have my midwife deliver.
I know that 37 weeks is not all that early, but it’s early for ME.
All my other babies were at least a week overdue.
Anyway, when he came out he wasn’t breathing.
They worked on him, and he still wasn’t breathing.
I remember how scared the nurses were, and the look on my husbands, and my Mom’s face.
They kept telling me everything was fine,
but I knew they were lying.
Why didn’t he cry, if everything was fine?
Nurses went running out of the room,
because equipment they needed was not properly stocked…
in the labour and delivery room.
Apparently I was hemorrhaging too,
the placenta didn’t come out right, or something.

It all turned out all right.
Nathan started to breathe, and he cried.
and that was the most wonderful sound I will ever hear.
They got the bleeding stopped, and I got to meet my son.
And hold him, smell him, and kiss him.
The next day he was covered in deep purple bruises, all on his torso area.
One older nurse was a little rough in trying to get him to breathe.
Poor guy,
his first experience in the world was of pain.

And that is his birth story.
Oh, and there was a blizzard right after he was born, so I didn’t get to go home.
I was stuck in the hospital, where they didn’t feed me.
I kid you not.
I had allergies they didn’t know how to deal with,
so they just didn’t.
Oh well.
The poor kid also started wearing glasses when he was 12 months old.
He is extremely farsighted,
and the optometrist explained to me that the distance he needed to be able to see clearly, meant that he would see nothing in a regular sized house.
To be able to see anything he’d have to be outside, where the distance was great enough.
This gave him some unique challenges.
Also, he has strabismus, or he’s crosseyed.
This also means that he only sees out of one eye at a time.
Which in turn means no depth perception.
He had surgery when he was two to correct the crossed eyes.
It was basically aesthetic.
He’ll never see out of both eyes at the same time,
but the social stigma of being cross eyed has been lessened, I hope.
The cool thing about Nathan is, he doesn’t let this bother him.
He has good self confidence, and actually doesn’t care what people think of him.
If some one does tease him, he gives it right back.
He loves to tease.
And joke.
And though he may look studious in his glasses, he hates reading.
He loves sports.
And playing with his siblings.
Sometimes his teasing get’s annoying, but he also has a very tenderheart.
Here’s some pictures of my boy.

He loves hunting rocks.
Nathan on the swings….
a Montage.
Every time.
Checking to make sure I’m still taking pictures.
Another crazy face, behind the feet.
Oh, and I do feed the kid.
I promise I do.
I LOVE him so much. He is such a fun guy! He makes me laugh all of the time with his antics and his comments. He's surprisingly cuddly, too. He warms my heart.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Heather.
He kills me. :D
ReplyDeleteI remember thinking that at least his heart was beating. I just felt that he was going to be fine.
Glad I was right. :)
(And BOO to crappy hospitals who can't send someone out to at least buy apples!!!!)
He looks like he loves life and lives it to the fullest!!
ReplyDeleteHeather you're crazy (in a great way, of course). I can only imagine how much fun your kiddos must be.
ReplyDeleteI love Nathan. He kills me, too. His sense of humour is ridonkulous, in a totally awesome way.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that he made it past that rough start (with the stopping breathing suddenly at nights, too... little stinker!) and is the incredible little boy he is now. :)
Didn't you do the not breathing thing when you were little?
ReplyDeleteHe rocks. He rocks huge. God gifted him with quite the personality. :)
